Abstract
NA - The aim of this thesis is to portray the form and function of sculptural expressions within the framework of architecture from the traditional past to contemporary Black Africa. The thesis begins with an introduction on the ethnographic accounts of the Negroes. Geographically, Black Africa is limited in this study to West Africa while culturally a number of peoples are selected from both the forest and the savanna regions. The material culture and artistic activities of these peoples are discussed with special reference to architectural styles. The form and function of African art is also discussed separately as a preamble to its form and functional expression in traditional architecture. While it is largely true that much of the sculpture produced by the negro is motivated by and associated with religion and function within religious institutions and activities, the emphasis on religion is rather dangerous. This thesis thus also discusses sculptures which have been inspired primarily by architect - KNUST Library |
