Title PLANNING AND MANAGERIAL PROBLEMS OF PRIVATE COLLEGES IN ADDIS ABABA

Abstract A THESIS PRESENTED TO THE SCHOOL OF GRADUATE STUDIES IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS IN EDUCATIONAL PLANNING AND MANAGEMENT - This study set out to examine the planning and managerial problems in the newly emerging private colleges. Thus, the purpose of this study was to look into the depth of practice and commitment towards planning and the way they are managing students, staff, facilities, resources and other managerial activities necessary to run the institutions. The study employed a descriptive survey and partly a comparative descriptive method. Seven out of the first accredited eight private colleges of Addis Ababa Serves as a sample for the study. The research involved two categories of sample population, college instructors and management members. In addition, data was gathered from officials of MOE, Addis Ababa City Administration and Investment Authority. Questionnaire survey, Interview and documentary analysis were the main instruments used to collect data. Both quantitative and qualitative data were collected and analyzed. The review of literature tried to overview the need of educational planning and management, a brief historical background of higher education in Ethiopia and the current global trends of private higher education focusing on the experiences of countries in developing countries. The major results of the study revealed positive attitude towards investing in higher education: Shortcomings in developing and implementing educational plans, managerial problems like recruiting and selection of staff, shortage of facilities and other human as well as material resources, planning as well as weaknesses in implementing staff development programs, and strengthening organizational structures and the like were revealed. On the other hand inefficient government support in accrediting, allocating land and other technical supports were also observed. Lastly, based on the findings and conclusions, recommendations are forwarded to alleviate some of the existing problems of the private colleges
