Abstract
This paper contributes to the discussion of use and application of ICT in education, and aims to compare the findings/results of a study carried out by C.M. Beukes-Amiss, in Scotland on: "The impact of electronic/online resources on teaching and learning in selected secondary schools in Scotland, with the current ICT situation in Namibian schools". As it was the aim of the study in Scotland to examine best practice, the findings were also interpreted for possible implementation in Namibia, elaborating on important issues such as planning, computer resources, staff training, curriculum use, and teaching and learning benefits. Furthermore, the paper discusses progress made in the application and use of ICT resources in Namibian schools, trying to answer the question where are we? with particular emphasis on issues such as: Telecommunication infrastructure and ICT infrastructure in schools, government's involvement, ICT training in schools, as well as identifying constraints. Reference is made to various initiatives aimed at increasing ICT capabilities of Namibians such as: Schoolnet Namibia, NIED, Nolnet and Ministries, and the position on ICT policy formulation and implementation in Namibia. It concludes with recommendations and suggestions on how to get to the ideal situation taking current resources and constraints into account. |
