Abstract
Inaugural lecture--Department of Zoology, Rand Afrikaans University, 15 September 1980 - Attention is drawn to the pressing need for post-graduates in South Africa and the opinion is expressed that unless drastic steps are taken now, the growing shortage of skilled manpower would have a detrimental effect on the economic growth and future development of this country. Since quaternary (post-graduate) education is primarily a function of universities and at the same time largely the responsibility of the state, it is essential that both devote urgent attention to the factors responsible for the low percentage of postgraduate students at universities. Some factors that need consideration are: (i) ignorance on the part of undergraduates with respect to possible careers (ii) the requirements for admission to post-graduate study and the award of a bursary (iii) the unrealistic value of post-graduate bursaries (iv) problems encountered by post-graduate students in finding suitable accommodation (v) the absence of adequate academic staff (vi) the lack of sufficient research facilities at universities. The research activities of the Zoology department are also reviewed. |
