Abstract
Maccoby and Martin's revision of Baumrind's parenting styles model was employed to evaluate the reationship between parenting styles and academic achievement. The study involved two senior secondary schools from the Kaffecho Zone in south western Ethiopia and 260 respondents from grades 9, 10, and 11. The respondents completed questionnaires about parenting styles and SES. Five point rating scales, 14 items in each scale, of the four parenting styles (authoritarian, authori tative, indulgent, and neglectful) and eleven multiple choice and completion items pertaining to SES were included in the questionnaire. The questionnaire was determined after a try-out. In the analysis, school marks for the 1994/95 academic year and for the 1995/96 first semester were used as dependent variables. ,The multiple regression analysis indicated that parenting styles contributed 29.32 percent of the variance in academic achievement. Authoritative father and authori tarian mother were observed to be significant contributors. The contribution of parenting styles to differences in achievement was evident even after SES's contribution to academic achievement was controlled. The results supported previous findings that parenting styles are important predictors of the academic achievement of senior secondary school students. |
