Abstract
In this study an attempt has been made to find out whether or not the use of language teaching games and activities in Ethiopian government elementary schools is more effective in developing, communicative ability in speaking English by providing the students an opportunity to use the language effectively. One hundred and thirty students were divided between an experimental and control group. An experiment was set using the teachin~ materials specially prepared. One set involved the use of games, the other set involved traditional exercises normally used by primary classes in Ethiopia. At the end, a test was administered to observe the outcome of the experiment. Thus, any variation in achievement between the two groups observed during the test could be attributed to the use of games. In the scores obtained the experimental group achieved significantly better results to ab the control group. On the basis of the findings it was recommended that language teaching games and activities should be integrated into the present syllabus or a new syllabus developed. |
