Abstract Word formation is a process creating new words from existing ones derivation and compounding are the most common process of word formation In this study an attempt is made to describe such word formation processes in Oromo. The main body of the paper has two parts. In the first part derivational processes are described. It is shown that different lexieal categories are derived by adding various. affixes to bases belonging to different lexical categories; and that the addition of the affixes entails different properties of phonology, morphology, syntax and semantics. In the second part, the process of compounding is described. It is shown that different lexical categories are formed by combining two words or stems; and that such a process also entails different phonological, morphological. Syntactic and semantic characteristics. Further more, the gaps to be found in the combination of different lexical categories in word formation of the language are explained.
