Abstract Fausto Duarte destacou-se como romancista ao revelar nos seus textos uma Guiné diferente daquela que fora descrita até então, particularmente pela sua capacidade em transmitir crenças e valores sem os estereótipos comuns da época. Partindo da identificação cultural do povo guineense, a sua obra literária veio equacionar o modo de vida desses povos, afirmando-a numa dimensão paisagística e antropológica. O presente estudo tem como objectivo realizar uma leitura cuidadosa de Auá, novela negra, de Fausto Duarte. Nele iremos proceder à análise das representações literárias, incidindo sobre os valores que integram a cultura e as tradições guineenses de modo geral, e as da etnia Fula de modo particular, verificando a representatividade e implicações desses valores na ordem comunitária do grupo. Partindo da avaliação atenta dos principais personagens da obra analisada e das acções desenvolvidas ao longo do texto, o estudo conclui que a afirmação do indivíduo junto da colectividade obedece primeiramente a uma fidelidade à cultura tradicional étnica em que o próprio se insere. - Fausto Duarte became distinguished as a writer due to revealing in his texts a different image of Guinea than the one described before. This image was particular because of to transmit believes and values is thout the common stereotypes of that time. His literary work, in which he applies a cultural identification of Guinean people, ponders both the lifestyle of Guinea population and their ethnic traditions, reinforcing their identity in the dimensions of landscape and anthropology. The objective of this study is to conduct an insightful reading of Duarte's Auá, novela negra analysing the literary representations of local reality present in this text. There are approached the principal themes which incorporate the culture and traditions of Guinea in general and of the Fula ethnic community in particular. The analisys will be completed by verifying the representativity of these values and their implications for the communal order of this group. After a careful observation of the main characters and action developed in the novel, the study is concluded with a thesis that the affirmation of individual identity within the community depends, primarily, on the loyalty to the traditional ethnical culture in which one integrated.
