Abstract
Abstract: Democracy in Nigeria This project examines the democracy in Nigeria and the key problem in our project is; how did state- and nationbuilding affect the democracy in Nigeria? To answer this we made two analyses and an additional analysis. The project examines whether the constitution of Nigeria contains democratic substances and how the security of institutions in the state, leads to a successful statebuilding in Nigeria. Further on, the project examines in our analysis, that in spite of the security of state institutions in the constitution, there are major problems with the democracy in Nigeria. Based on the studies, surveys and our interview, our analysis leads us to mistrust, poverty, crime and lack of legitimacy of the state is a major problem to the democracy in Nigeria, and the constitution is not enough to ensure a successful democratization. Further on this leads us to the study of the identity feeling of the population in Nigeria, and how the population of Nigeria feels more like a part of an ethnic group or more as a Nigerian. The project examines through surveys and a qualitative interview if there has occurred a nationbuilding in the country. This leads us to the conclusion, that it's very hard to create one national unity among the people, because of the existing ethnic diversity in Nigeria. Furthermore, a common language is also a big part of creating one national identity. The project concludes that democratization in a country is a long and comprehensive process. There has happened a statebuilding, but there haven't been a nationbuilding, and this can lead to a massive lack of legitimacy among the people. Building a nation in Nigeria is essential to achieve cohesion among the population and to create a united democratic state. |
