Abstract
This project sets out to analyse the Algerian position in the Euro-Algerian cooperation, and the purpose is to examine the driving forces and obstacles for the transnational cooperation. It is a quantitative analysis which aim is to prove that national interests are curbing the cooperation, and the analysis is based on two overall theories: world-system theory and liberalism. The theories provide tools; firstly, to define the nature of the Euro-Algerian cooperation; secondly, to demonstrate reasons for Algerian hesitation and institutional importance; and finally, the analysis illustrates that the Euro-Algerian cooperation is progressing because of external circumstances. Furthermore, the analysis demonstrates that the nature for the Euro-Algerian cooperation changes from being interdependent to becoming dependent with the Algerian Action Plan. The analysis also illustrates that the Algerian past and its national interest do affect the Algerian position in the Euro-Algerian cooperation. Additionally, the analysis also underlines the importance of neutral grounding that institutions provide. Finally, it is concluded that security issues have been the reason for Algeria's renewed interest in enhancing the Euro-Algerian cooperation, and earlier obstacles regarding economic and political matters have hereby become subordinate. |
