Abstract
This project investigates the ideas of two central black leaders of the 20th century, W.E.B. Du Bois and Marcus Garvey. The aim was to study how their respective notions of race had an impact on their visions of a Pan-African future, with a focus on Africa and America. This was done by examining the developments of their ideas from 1914-1937. As both perspectives was examined it showed that the leaders basically maintained their initial notions of race. This meant for Du Bois that race was constructed and for Garvey that race was an essential value of a person. This eventually meant that Du Bois sought an Africa where black people should be the main population, but where white people likewise could be citizens. Garvey on the other hand, planned an Africa solely 'for the Africans'. These differences in understanding race also led to different views on race-relations in the US, though Du Bois changed his position on this topic in the 1930's. This study eventually concluded that the visions and ideas of Du Bois and Garvey had many similarities, but in a few central points, they differed. Therefore they became enemies. |
