Abstract
This project analyses the political and structural mechanisms and processes of the dynamic contentious spread of the Arab Spring between the social movement mobilizations of Tunisia, Egypt, Iran, and Libya, which has all been affected by the contention of the Arab Spring. The analysis of the spread of the Arab Spring among the aforementioned countries focuses on the collective actions of the respective mobilizations each of which consists of several social movements, constituted by political actors. To understand the spread of the contentious politics and the effects of the Arab Spring among the respective mobilizations this project will examine the development of each of these mobilizations before turning to analyse and understand how the mobilizations have affected each other and how the implications of the spread on each mobilization have affected these respectively. In doing so the project adopts a structural approach to the analysis. The analysis concludes that a contentious event catalyses a mobilization and that this event is the result of the accumulated frustrations of the actors and their observation of changes of political opportunities. The actors contemplate their possibilities of successful collective action and the threats that may arise in response to this action. Based on their characteristics the mobilizations can be put into two distinct behavioural categories: one where the actors of the mobilization act inside the limits of the institutional political system and one where the mobilization actors act outside the limits of the institutional political system. Furthermore the analysis finds that the Iranian mobilization differs from the other mobilizations according to its lack of diversity among the social movements inside the mobilization and its lack of mobilization of actors and resources. The Iranian mobilization's lack of these attributes stress the importance of these features for a successful development of a social mobilization in the distinct contentious context of the Arab Spring. The analysis also finds that a dynamic retaliative relationship is found between the actions of the respective mobilizations and the government. Finally the analysis finds that when in a contentious episode, a mobilization gains moral support from the other mobilizations, through the effects of the Arab Spring on that mobilization, surprisingly. |
