Abstract
This project is a health promotion project, and evolves around HIV in Swaziland. The project is set our to investigate the high prevalence of HIV among women in Swaziland, and focuses on what is done and what could be done in the country to prevent further HIV transmission, and HIV transmission from mother-to-child. Multi-method has been used, in order to research both quantitative data and qualitative data, using document analysis. In order to comprehend the field of interest, the theory of Critical Realism have been used, as this theory recognises material conditions to be a reality, and to influence the social systems within a country. Swaziland was found to put emphasis on HIV prevention, but health promotion initiatives were found to be lacking. Stigma and discrimination are some of the key drivers to why the Swazi population are reluctant to be tested for HIV. The lack of knowledge on the virus increases the levels of stigma. Gender inequality was also found to be an essential key driver to the high HIV prevalence, and therefore this project stresses the importance of empowerment of women. |
