Abstract
In this project report we have examined the causes of the pros and cons of the growing foreign direct investments. In addition, we looked at how these investments affect countries that are invested in. We have chosen to look at the Chinese investment in, respectively, DR Congo and Mozambique, as these have proven to be major investment-cases. We have chosen one case per country, and these are both examples of large investments from China. Both cases have led to some advantages and disadvantages that affect both countries today, but which can also affect the countries in the future. This is because a part of the impact from these investments only can be pointed out, once the agreements are fully implemented. To examine the pros and cons, we have thereto looked at factors in the Human Development Index (HDI). This should help us to show the advantages and disadvantages, as our research literature indicates, have seen a positive or negative development. In both countries the HDI showed a positive progress both before, during and after the two cases were implemented. This led to a conclusion that our hypothesis that Chinese investment is not really a good development alternative has been rejected. |
