Abstract
This project examines the ability of The Mine Workers Union of Zambia to utilise the Political Opportunity Structure, which is created by the Zambian State. The project furthermore, delves into how China affects the Political Opportunity Structure. The case study of the current situation is undertaken with the application of Social Movement Unionism Theory and Political Opportunity Structure Theory, in order to explain the role of the Mine Workers Union of Zambia, and its relationship with the institutional political environment. By delving into the objective picture of Political Opportunity Structure and contesting it with the trade union's own subjective perception of their ability to utilise the opportunities the state provides. The project finds that the Chinese influence on the Zambian state challenges the Mine Workers Unions of Zambia's ability to utilise the Political Opportunity Structure. Thus, the MUZ is compromised in their abilities to utilise the established POS on the basis of a disadvantageous, weak Zambian government, affected by a corrupting Chinese influence. |
