Abstract This paper examines the phenomenon 'foreign fighters' from a historical perspective, in- vestigating the personal motivations of Danish foreign fighters through time. Exploring three very different conflicts in three different eras, this paper seeks to draw understanding of the current Danish syria-warriors, who receives much attention in Danish media. The goal of this paper is to explore potential change in the motivations for becoming a Danish foreign fighter and to examine how this potential change displays. Through a comparative analysis concerning similarities and differences between the motivations of Danish foreign fighters in Congo, Germany and Syria, we seek to answer our main-question of this paper; have motivations for Danish foreign fighters changed through time?
