Title Madness in Postcolonial Fiction

Abstract This project deals with two postcolonial novels: A question of power from 1974 by Bessie Head and In the heart of the country from 1977 by J.M. Coetzee. Both novels take their point of departure in female characters who suffers from madness. These two representations of madness are analyzed in regards to how they are narratively constructed and what they mean. The theories and concepts applied in this project cover: Voice, Discourse, African cosmology, Animism, Shamanism, Foucault's Madness and Civilization and Homi K. Bhabha's theory on hybrid identity. This project concludes that the madness portrayed needs to be seen as fluid, since all considerations must be taken into account when determining the hybrid space of the mad-person.
