Abstract
In this project we attempt to shed light on the process of cultural identities that Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie portrays in her novel Half of A Yellow Sun (2006). The novel revolves around the Biafran-Nigerian civil war in the 1960's in postcolonial Nigeria. Through three primary narratives, each from different backgrounds and cultures, we are introduced to the difficulties and strangeness, being in a war means. The story is told through the three primary focalized characters, the white british man Richard, the academic Olanna, and her houseboy Ugwu. In this project we will analyse the book through different postcolonial theories. We will focus on Ugwus identity and 'voice' as a process, Richards ambivalence as a white british man wanting to become biafran as well has his relationship with the nigerian woman Kainene, and the lack of national identity and polarisation in Nigeria as a whole. We will give an account of the relevant theories of Mikhail Bachtin, Frantz Fanon, and Stuart Hall, among others for our project and through these, analyse the most significant passages and characters. In the discussion we try to debate how the characters identities evolves through the novel as well as an debate on how Adichie uses these characters, what she aspires her novel to achieve, and if there is anything problematic about it. Although a definitive answer is impossible to reach, this project tries to focus on different aspect of the novel and its characters through the selected theories. |
