Abstract
This thesis aims to present the situation of refugees and asylum seekers fled from civil wars and persecution after the outbreak of the so-called 'Arab spring' in 2011. In particular, this thesis has illustrated the reception and social integration's policies enacted by the European Union and, more specifically, by the Italian State in response to the flows of migrants arrived on the national territory. Starting from the theory of the 'state of exception', this thesis analysed the difficulties that the Italian reception system has presented during the Emergency North Africa (ENA) and on the aftermath of new arrivals from the African coasts. Additionally, this study has been supported and enriched by an ethnographic fieldwork research conducted at the informal and occupied migrants and refugees centre 'Ex-Moi', based in Turin (Italy). Therefore, through a critical stance on this issue, it has been possible to establish that refugees and asylum seekers, or more generically migrants, are inevitably becoming new social actors that play a central role in the decision-making process, from the international to the local dimension. |
