Abstract
This thesis entitled 'A History of Private Indigenous Entrepreneurship in Jos metropolis, 1902-1985', aims at documenting the historic role of Nigerians in the development of the private sector in Jos metropolis in the period 1902-1985. This is done against the background of among others first, belief that Jos and the Jos Plateau in general is not an entrepreneurial area and second, the debate between Marxists and their opponents about whether or not capitalist development was taking place in Africa. It argues that: (i) the Jos Plateau in general and Jos Metropolis in particular have traditions indigenous practice of entrepreneurship rooted in pre-colonial Jos Plateau production trade, (ii) indigenous entrepreneurship in Jos metropolis has both capitalist and non capitalist form and has since the colonial period been growing, as evidenced by the growth and expansion of the number of entrepreneurial activities with indigenous participation. Such activities are a combination of traditional, pre-colonial economic activities and newly introduced activities; (iii) non-capitalist/non-industrial forms of entrepreneurship have dominated private indigenous businesses, as mainly small-scale d commercial establishments prevail; (iv) the reasons for the smallness of scale and commercial orientation of indigenous entrepreneurship in Jos metropolis is a function of storical factors including the lack of professionalism in pre-colonial trade and the destructive role of early colonialism; and (v) public policy is very important in determining the development or otherwise of private entrepreneurship. For example, while colonialism was inhibitive, post-colonial policies like indigenization and loans were enhancers |
