Abstract
Museums in Nigeria are service organizations. Measurement of staff performance in the museum is in relative terms because it is unlike manufacturing organizations where goods produced in a given period of time may measure performance. Motivation therefore, becomes very slippery and requires a good understanding of motivation techniques at the operational level. In the National Museum, Jos, the morale of workers at their duty posts has been observed to be very low and this has generally affected the services being rendered by the organization. Since it is an acceptable fact that, motivation scheme redeems the activities of members of ant organization, it is therefore pertinent to assume that, good motivation scheme for the staff of National Museum, Jos, bring about corresponding improved services to the public. Specifically, this study identifies the circumstances surrounding low morale of workers in the National Museum, Jos. The following hypotheses are formulated and tested: Lack of adequate incentives lead to poor performance of duty. Training and Career development affect workers performance. Delayed promotion has significant effect on attitude of workers. Environmental factors affect job performance. The study shows that, majority of the workers want the museum management to provide more incentives for them 1n order to be motivated to put in their best. In our findings, we recommend measures that will bring I about effective job performance. |
