Abstract
Wase Emirate is an Islamic society that can best be described as an enclave of Islam in the midst of non-Muslim ethnic groups in Plateau State, Nigeria. Wase and Kanam its neighbor are the only two Local Government Areas in the state with a significant Muslim population with Emirs as their traditional rulers. This dissertation "A History of Wase Emirate from 1817 - 2006" therefore examines how Wase was established as a frontier of Islam in the midst of the non-Islamic communities of the Jos-Plateau lowlands during the aftermath of the declaration of the nineteenth century Sokoto Jihad and how it has continued to exist in their midst. This research appraises the evolutionary process through which Wase was established as a vassal of Bauchi Emirate, how it became an Emirate under British colonial rule and a Local Government Area in Plateau State Nigeria. The research analyzes the history of Wase in the light of the dynamics that have guided the development of the area. Thus the period 1817 to 1820 was significant in the history of Wase because in the year 1817 proponents of the nineteenth century Sokoto Jihad made their incursion into the Wase area. This period is considered as the formative period of Wase Emirate. From that period onwards Wase showed military prowess in the lowland area of the Jos Plateau until it was subdued by the British in 1898. During the period of British colonialism and the post independence era Wase passed through a lot of significant historical changes which culminated into xii its alienation from Bauchi and Sokoto. These events are examined in this work. However 2006 became an equally important watermark in the history of Wase because in that year the nineteenth Sultan of Sokoto (traditional head of the transformed Sokoto Calipate) died and his successor was chosen and installed. This event was very important because the Emir of Wase used the condolence visit and subsequent homage to the successor of the Sultanate to showcase the umbilical cord that linked Wase traditional authorities to the seat of the Caliphate. Therefore this dissertation is a study of the changes that have taken place in the history of Wase Emirate from its inception till date. |
