Emphasis was placed on students in our Post-Primary institutions who are facing multi-variate marital and educational problems ranging from sex abuse, unwanted pregnancies drop out rate from school etc. The Primary Schools are however not left out of Guidance and Counsel-ling as this is the corner stone of personality development. The sample for the study comprised 200 respondents from all works of life and also included the students in the six localized Kaje groups or conferedaries mentioned in the brief history of the Kaje people. 30 questionnaire and 12 open-ended questions were used for literate and illiterate respondents respectively. The result of the study indicated that there is a great need for traditional counselling which should be used side by side the applicable Western model or approaches. The findings also showed that the need to uphold our traditions cannot be over emphasised if the youths are to be helped to cope up with the series of the problems they are facing today. The educational Implications on the youths in the area were highlighted and the need for sex education and marital guidance and counselling were brought to the fore front. The outcry for the youths to seek for Traditional Counselling in all matters affecting their lives was proved to be in order as respondents indicated that the youths generally need urgent attention of the parents and the, schools. Eleven assumptions were stated and the results were tabulated and presented in percentages for the purposes of proving or disproving the basic assumptions. Sub-assumptions and questions were however necessary to give credence to certain basic assumptions. It was concluded that the youths in Kaje land need traditional marriage counselling more than ever before in order to avoid youthful marriages, unwanted pregnancies, sex abuse and consequent drop out from the secondary school. The educational implications for youthful acts which cause- concern to them and their parents as well as the Kaje people generally were highlighted. This study therefore advocates for Traditional Counselling to be introduced in schools as complementary to the Western approaches being in use in schools today. Of course, some schools do not have the modern guidance and counselling services. The sponsoring of guidance and counselling students in our various Universities and Colleges is a commendable effort in this regard to meet the needs of our youths. Recommendations were made on how to help the: youths out of their marital and educational problems. |
