Abstract
This thesis answers the question to what extent the liberal statebuilding approach contributes to sustainable peace in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). In order to measure sustainable peace, the Pillars of Peace developed by the Institute for Economics and Peace are used. Building sustainable peace in the DRC seems to be a never-ending project. Despite peace agreements and promises of the conflict parties, the violence continues. Since the end of the Cold War, the United Nations engaged itself in peacebuilding in the DRC with an approach aimed at the development of a liberal state. UN peacekeeping operations have tried to limit the violence and to contribute to sustainable peace for fifteen years now. Since the results remain disappointing, the UN changed its strategy several times, but still the conflict in the DRC endures. This raises the question if liberal statebuilding is the right approach to build sustainable peace. This research will answer that question. |
