Abstract
The aim of this research was to answer the research questions what are environmental (socio ' economic, social and cultural) factors affecting students' dropout, which group girl or boy students affected more, which group rural or urban areas affected more by dropout, when time of the year students; dropout is high, and which grade level is affected by dropout. This study employed both qualitative and quantitative research strategies in analyzing the findings of the study. The design of the study was a cross sectional research design which involves the retrieving of data from study participants, mostly from multiple groups, thus; 335 students, 14 head teachers, 5 principals and from 24 dropped out students by using random sampling method. Data was gathered through questionnaires, interviews and document analysis. The data collected were analyzed through both quantitative and qualitative means interpreted by using SPSS Excel software, charts, and graphs tools The study found that poverty, gender factor, and low quality education are the major causes of dropout in the Wayu Tuka Woreda secondary The paper also recommends that education campaigns should be planned to improve methodology of teaching English language in secondary schools. Public sensitization about the value and importance of education should be strengthened. The study again recommends that, the government should treat the school dropout issue seriously and make national education plans to assist the poor continue with their studies. Interventions by educational policy makers, the Government, NGOs, etc. to reduce dropout rate should not be focused on only female pupils but also on male students as well |
