Abstract The study seeks to find out the impact of remittances on the livelihood of the recipients in Ghana. It also seeks to identify the problems in the operations of inward remittances in Ghana with special emphasis on Merchant Bank Ghana Limited. Thirdly, the study will find out how Merchant Bank has been trying to solve these problems. Finally, the study advances appropriate recommendation to Merchant Bank, the Bank of Ghana and other stakeholders with a view to improving the operations of remittances in Ghana. The study used a sampling size of one hundred (100) clients of Merchant Bank who receive remittances through the Bank among four (4) of its payment centers at Accra, Kumasi, Konongo and Bibiani. The findings revealed that remittance is playing an important role in the lives of many households in Ghana in financing of education, building projects, and trading activities and in many instances remittances constitute over 50% of recipients sources of income. It also found out that people still use informal means for remitting money to the country. Among the recommendations made was the introduction of national identification cards to enable recipient get ID cards as a form of identification.
