Abstract
This article presents the results of an evaluative study of 58 secondary school libraries in Ghana. They were evaluated in terms of infrastructure, bookstock, financial resources, organisation and use of facilities and their impact on the teaching- learning process. The paper seeks to demonstrate that the performance of secondary school libraries in Ghana is grossly inadequate in meeting the growing needs of education. This state of affairs has come about, first, because of a lack of money for secondary school libraries development and secondly through the poor management of these libraries. The article discusses some of the factors which have impeded the development of good libraries in secondary schools. Their greatest defect is lack of proper organisation. They are also inadequately housed and ill-equipped. Besides the staffing of these libraries with untrained personnel contribute to their uneven development and ineffectiveness. Although conscious efforts have been made by many secondary schools to enhance the quality and role of the library, they have been forced by present-day scarcity arid high costs to restrict accessibility to books in order to avoid losses or thefts. Admittedly there is a positive correlation between education, libraries and social advancement yet no clearly defined national policy exists on the development of secondary school libraries in the country. It is concluded that secondary school libraries throughout Ghana are so poor, both qualitatively and quantitatively, that much remains to be done to enhance their status in order to bring them to the standards of similar libraries elsewhere. - Article published in International Review of Children's Literature and Librarianship, vol. 5, no. 2 - KNUST |
