Abstract In the Gospels the concept of forgiveness is discussed in relation to the Son of Man who has power to forgive sins and the community of faith who must forgive in order to receive God's forgiveness. Sin and forgiveness is the main emphasis of Jesus in Matthew 6:12. However, the reading of the text in the some Ghanaian mother-tongue translations of the Bible reveals that the terms used to translate sin and forgiveness implies that God 'loans us our wrong doings' when we confess, instead of forgiving us outright. This understanding makes the wrong-doer think that he or she is always a debtor. It does not promote the spiritual development of the Christian; and consequently, has compelled Ghana to join the association of Highly Indebted Poor Countries (HIPC), in order to get more funds for development. It is being suggested that Ghanaian biblical scholars and interpreters should use appropriate cultural categories to translate Jewish and Greek concepts in the Bible so that readers can understand and apply the biblical message in their respective religio-cultural and pluralistic contexts. - Kuwornu-Adjaottor, J.
