Abstract This paper surveys some of the interpretations of mais gunikos andra, normally translated as 'husband of one wife' in 1Timothy 3:2a, one of the qualifications of an aspiring candidate to the office of an elder/bishop. The writer gives a background to the situation in the church at Ephesus when Paul wrote 1Timothy 3:1-16, the pericope of the text under discussion. He presents a comparative reading of 1 Timothy 3:1-2 in some Ghanaian mother-tongue translations of the Bible - Akuapem Twi, Asante Twi, Fante, Ewe, Dangme and Ga - and then analyses verse 2a literally, as the readers of the text in their various mother'tongues would do, without using any study aid. The goal is to bring to the fore, an African contribution to the interpretation of the text. The study of the text in the Ghanaian mother-tongue Bibles reveals that Paul's admonition to the candidate aspiring to the office of an elder/bishop/overseer is not about the person being a male, or female or being married; it is about the one being above reproach, having a good reputation. - Kuwornu-Adjaottor, J.
