Abstract Esta tese analisa a história da fotografia na denominada 'África colonial portuguesa' ' Angola, Cabo Verde, Guiné-Bissau, Moçambique e São Tomé e Príncipe ', entre 1875 e 1940. Em primeiro lugar, defendo que a fotografia serviu para legitimar o poder num momento crucial da definição do império; por outro, que a fotografia assumiu características semelhantes nas colónias africanas. A partir de duas partes temáticas pretendo elaborar uma leitura transversal da fotografia nestes territórios. Na primeira parte, abordo a fotografia no âmbito de expedições e campanhas que visaram o estudo e o controlo territorial. No terreno, exploradores e militares são os principais agentes a recorrer à fotografia. No início do século XX, emergem outras viagens que já não dependem da estrutura militar, marcando um momento de transição na democratização da fotografia. Na segunda parte, analiso alguns projetos fotográficos que, de diferentes modos, fizeram parte na construção do Estado colonial. A proliferação de fotógrafos profissionais e amadores, por um lado, e a circulação e a reprodução de fotografias em álbuns, periódicos, postais e exposições, por outro, contribuíram para a divulgação do projeto colonial. Pretendo analisar fotografias, diferentes agentes fotográficos e os temas fotografados valorizando as possíveis dinâmicas geradas entre os territórios, demonstrando que a fotografia contribuiu para uma ideia de África portuguesa. - This thesis analyses the history of photography in the colonies of Portuguese Africa ' Angola, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique and São Tomé and Príncipe ' between 1875 and 1940. Firstly, I argue that photography served to legitimise power at a crucial moment in the definition of the empire; secondly, that photography assumed similar characteristics in African colonies. From two thematic parts, I intend to elaborate a transversal reading of photography in these territories. In the first part, I discuss photography in the context of expeditions and campaigns to study and to control the territory. Explorers and militaries are the main actors to use photography. At the beginning of the 20th century, other journeys emerged and no longer depend on the military structure, marking a moment of transition in the democratisation of photography. In the second part, I analyse some photographic projects which, in different ways, were part of the construction of the colonial state. The proliferation of professional and amateur photographers, on the one hand, and the circulation and reproduction of photographs in albums, periodicals, postcards, and exhibitions, on the other, contributed to the dissemination of the colonial project. I intend to analyse photographs, different photographic agents and the subjects photographed, valuing the possible dynamics generated between the territories, demonstrating that photography has contributed to an idea of Portuguese Africa.
