Abstract
Wilhelm J. G. Möhlig, internationally renowned scholar in African linguistic studies based at the University of Cologne, passed away on 6th August 2023. In this obituary, Lutz Diegner pays homage to his academic life and provides a personal account of his encounters with him. He highlights Möhlig's major achievements in Bantu linguistics, nurtured by his research in Namibian and Kenyan languages, and his engagement with a variety of other disciplines, including the teaching of African languages, oral literature, literary translation, as well as pre-colonial African history, and African law. He emphasizes Möhlig's role as a teacher of several generations of scholars, and his commitment to promote multi-disciplinary African studies in Germany and beyond. |
